There are many definitions of e-learning. I will discuss one of my favorite, from Goodyear as cited in Naidu (2003), because of several reason.
Goodyear argues that e-learning is "the systematic use of networked multimedia computer technologies to empower learners, improve learning, connect learners to people and resources supportive to their needs, and to integrate learning with performance and individual with organizational goals.”I really love this definition, because it's packed with educational purposes. Firstly, the definition implies that e-learning is not only about technology. Goodyear only mention multimedia computer technology in a small fraction of the overall definition. Mostly he talked about the learning itself.
Secondly, the use of technology must be systematic. It implies that whoever wants to use technology, must design it with careful. We have to analyze, design, develop the materials, implement and evaluate it systematically.
Third, the technology must be meaningful for both students and teacher. It has to be empowering, improving learning and connecting people with resources and other people. If the technology is hindering the learning process, what it is worth for?
Lastly, e-learning should be viewed as a mean to accomplished a certain goals, which is learning goals and organizational goals. We have to ask, "what is the learning objectives?", "can it be achieved using e-learning?", "what is my organization wants the learner to be?". The main point is that e-learning must help learning to achieve it's goal.
In summary, I love Goodyear definitions because it comprise of important features so that learning can take place effectively and efficiently.
